Situated in the southeast corner of sendai mediatheque, Tube 5 is the largest tube among the 13 independent steel-ribbed shafts comprising the smt architecture structure, the so-called "tubular columns". And the form of "tubular columns" is like the 13 seaweed or kelps swinging in the giant aquarium designed by Japanese architect Toyo ITO awarded Golden Lion Award at Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition in 2002. Unlike other tubes housing elevators, Tube 5 is the only vertical passage for stairways with the lovely sunshine. However, Tube 5 has difference in its function now. It is not only a passageway for visitors but also a special artistic space with sound/ media installations in smt. It is what-is-called "project tube 5" for re-development. As a smt curator said, the visitors in smt used to go one floor to another by elevators, not by stairs. For that reason, smt made attempts to create "project tube 5" that makes Tube 5 a whole new artistic space and changes the visitors' acts in entering Tube 5, away from elevators, perhaps it is a good opportunity for the visitor to introduce the events on each floor by stairs and their foot.
In my opinion, people are always lazy by human nature. But smt tried to went against Laziness through "project tube 5". In other words, this nature inspired directly the curator to plan the project. So "project tube 5" is not only to provide the innovative way for the visitors to contact with artists' work, but also to change the visitors' behavior by the power of Art with sound/ media installation. As the Taiwanese proverb says, "Laziness pushes ahead with the human civilization." And "project tube 5" is an interesting demonstration for this saying. On the other hand, "project tube 5" for smt operation is one of the creative strategies for broadening the scope of services or activities in my sense of Management. With time goes by or changes in conditions, an organization has to adjust their services and activities for their clients or give a new meaning to inspire their users' needs. In "project tube 5" case, smt observed the visitors' behavior to understand their meaning beyond their conduct. Next, they launched "project tube 5" to provide the new service for sound /media art, different from the exhibits held in Gallery 4200 or 3300. In the end, they created a flash meaning for Tube 5, as a unique artistic space with its architecture feature. To my mind, "project tube 5" is a shining example for project planning and its operation.
By the way, recently smt has started a new plan, on which smt distribute the artwork by Artist Tetsuya UMEDA from October 4th to December 24th in Tube 5. Maybe you will hear curious sounds full of the tubular space, find some words or sentences behind the stairs when climbing the winding stairs. Whatever you see, hear or feel in Tube 5, you will have inconceivable experience at the first visual and auditory senses with its seaweed-shaped space in smt.
