From the morning on October 11th to the evening on October 13th, I had a rather impressive experience in classical music. I can't believe that I went to the 11 concerts for 9 hours in the whole three days. Going back as far as music classes in school as I can remember, each class just took 1or 2 hours only in a week. But this time, the total of 101 concerts is scheduled at 10 halls of 4 places in 3 days. To my mind, it's just like a marathon of classical music concerts in my music sense. And about this classical music marathon, it is called "Sendai Classical Music Festival", short for "Sen-Cla" in Japanese. This festival is an annual multi-cultural event containing classical music festival and other classical-music related activities, organized by the Sendai Cultural Foundation and executed by the Sendai Classical Music Festival Executive Committee.
As a member institution of the Sendai Cultural Foundation, sendai mediatheque offers open square on the 1st floor to participate in this festival project on transferring Sendai into a Musical Theme Park. Different from other concert halls in Sendai, Open square of smt is a multi-purpose place for movie, workshops, lecture, theatrical performances, etc. Especially at night, there are two tubes with shine passing through the space vertically when the concert was proceeding. It's just like another visual performance with light at the same time.
In addition, I had an interesting experience in "Sen-Cla ". There are two special concerts for small children and babies, including infants of less than a year. And the songs in the concerts are specially planned for children and babies, such as the theme song of TOTORO or Japanese children's ballads. When the concert was proceeding, I discovered that some children started moving their small bodies and shaking their hands with the melody, even sang aloud with the song. In my opinion, it is a scarce opportunity for small children to contact with music through this on-site concert, different from CDs, TV programs, and piano tutors. As the Taiwanese proverb say, "children who learn music can't behave in disorderly manner."
On the other hand, it is also a society class for parents to teach their children how to behave in the concert occasion. For example, children might be curious about the signs "No Photography" or "No Recording" around the open square; parents could explain these signs for respecting the performers and protecting their performances from copyright issues. That is, how to behave in concert or theater is also a sign to show the culture accomplishments of one country. And "Sen-Cla" might be an excellent society education for the manner of Art and Culture to my mind.
