Photography has the power to superimpose both "reality" and "illusion" in its images. Photography was born in 1839 in France and England, making it nearly 170 years since its birth. Ever since, photographers have become the "Apostles of Deception and Reality". They have been diving into undiscovered worlds to provide images of the world's nature, society, history, architecture, people, communities, the human body and their own desires to create history.
Photography became a mystic mirror image of the cutting edge of the era. Meanwhile, cities, a melting pot of dreams and greed, became important stages inspiring photographers' imagination.
This exhibition features photographs from "Paris, New York, Tokyo and Shanghai". Each one of these pieces impacts those of us living in the current world with its strong beauty, and sometimes agonizing image. We begin with Daguerreotype and goes on to:
Paris; represented by photographs from Ducamp, Eugène Atget, Wols, Brassai, Man Ray and Bernard Faucon.
New York: Garry Winogrand, Robert Mapplethorpe, Robert Frank, William Klein, Larry Clark and Lee Friedlander.
Tokyo: Kimura Ihee, Moriyama Daido, Araki Nobuyoshi, Ina Eiji, Shibata Toshio Hatakeyama Naoya and Yashiro Toshihiro.
Shanghai: Ma Liuming, Zhang Dali, Zhou Tiehai, Ronrong & Inri and Zhongbio, Kun Bulei, Aiguo.
This photography exhibition showing works from our nation as well as from all over the world, can surely be called a museum displaying the past and the future of photography. By looking at the cities that are displayed, we also see that the city itself became a form of media. What is the future of photography? What is the future of these cities? "New Discoveries through Photography" is a great expedition that we are taken to by explorers light and shading.
I hope that you will come experience it all at sendai mediatheque.

摄影肇始于银板照相法、而作为发源地的巴黎、其艺术家为Ducamp、 Eugène Atget、 Wols、Brassai、Man Ray與Bernard Faucon;
纽约艺术家有Garry Winogrand、Robert Mapplethorpe、Robert Frank、 William Klein、Larry Clark 及 Lee Friedlander
